CSV File Too Large for Excel: What to Do

Nothing uploadedTested up to 100 MB

Data workflow illustration for CSV File Too Large for Excel: What to Do

If Excel says a CSV was not loaded completely, or the last rows are missing, the file may be larger than one worksheet can hold.

The important number is 1,048,576 rows. That is the maximum number of rows in one Excel worksheet according to Microsoft's Excel specifications and limits. A CSV with more rows cannot fit into a single sheet.

Nablyx accepts one CSV and splits it into smaller CSV files packaged in a ZIP, using row count, target file size, or number of parts. Processing stays local in your browser with no upload, up to 100 MB. The registry-backed evidence follows the first-party audit method in docs/tool-audit/batch-a.md; the current tool entry records three passing 100 MiB repeats for both representative and pathological test shapes.

Why Excel stops at 1,048,576 rows

CSV files do not have Excel's worksheet limit. They can contain far more rows.

Excel can still open part of a very large CSV, but it cannot place more than 1,048,576 rows in one worksheet. That means the bottom of the file may be missing from what you see in Excel.

Keep the original CSV unchanged. If Excel loaded only part of the file, do not save that partial worksheet over the original CSV. You could replace the full file with only the rows Excel managed to load.

How to make the CSV usable in Excel

The simplest fix is to split the large CSV into smaller CSV files.

  1. 01

Keep a copy of the original

Do not work on the only copy of a large export. Keep the full source file unchanged.

  2. 02

Add the CSV to the splitter

Choose one CSV up to 100 MB. The tool checks it on your device and shows the row count.

  3. 03

    Choose Rows per file

For Excel, use a value comfortably below 1,048,576. Values such as 250,000 or 500,000 are easier to work with.

  4. 04

Keep the header in every part

Leave the header option on so every CSV opens with the same column names.

  5. 05

    Split and download

Download the zip file. It contains the smaller CSV parts in order.

If your problem is an upload limit instead of Excel's row limit, you can split by maximum file size. If you simply want a fixed number of roughly even files, choose Number of parts.

What happens to your file?

Your CSV stays on your device while the tool checks and splits it. It is not uploaded to our servers.

The original file is not changed. The result is a zip file containing the smaller CSV files.

Practical limits

The splitter accepts one CSV up to 100 MB.

Splitting solves the size problem. It does not stop Excel from changing how some values look. For example, Excel can still remove leading zeros from IDs or reformat dates when you open each part.

If you actually need one file per country, store, status, or another category, use the split CSV by column value tool instead. That is a grouping task, not a size task.

Simple example

Suppose a CSV has 1,250,000 data rows. Choose 500,000 rows per file.

The download contains three CSV parts:

part-001.csv — 500,000 rows
part-002.csv — 500,000 rows
part-003.csv — 250,000 rows

Result: each part is well below Excel's 1,048,576-row worksheet limit.

If you only need to inspect column names, missing values, and basic value patterns without opening the whole file in Excel, use the CSV profiler.
